An evolving design language

Pixelgrade Pattern Language

A living language for making coherent, original sites across scales. Use it to read a composition, compare recurring solutions, and assemble a working language for the next site.

Move from whole pages to decisive details.

The map keeps every public stage visible. Solid entries are canonical; the others show where the language is still learning, merging, or changing its mind.

One catalogue, one pattern in focus.

15 patterns in view

What do the stages mean?
Canonical
Reviewed, recurrent, and validated through original composition.
Emerging
The invariant is visible, but a contradiction or composition test remains.
Field Note
A contextual observation whose broader claim is still deliberately small.
Merged, Retired, Contradicted
Useful history remains visible when the language changes its mind.

CandidateChapterField Note

Glued Split Band

A media-and-text section should read as a chapter with its own atmosphere, but ordinary outer spacing leaves it floating like a card on the page.

Context

Try this where a color field, image, and passage need to make one edge-to-edge unit or where several such chapters form a continuous run.

Forces

  • Full bleed gives the chapter authority.
  • Copy still needs interior breathing room.
  • Small unintended seams reveal the page background and break the illusion of one object.

Make the outer field continuous and decide explicitly which edges breathe inside it. Glue adjacent colored fields at their shared seam, allow media to reach an edge when it carries the chapter, and preserve dedicated air around the language.

Known expressions

The resolution is a field, not a frozen form. Start from what the situation asks for.

  1. 01

A single tonal chapter with flush media and inset copy.

  2. 02

An alternating run whose images meet at the central seam.

  3. 03

Two consecutive color fields treated as chapters of the same object.

Watch for

  • Default spacing leaves a thin strip of page color between fields.
  • Removing all padding makes body text touch media.
  • Gluing every section eliminates the page's larger pulse.

Evidence

4 reviewed contexts

Four reviewed uses establish the seam mechanics. An original composition must still prove when glue improves the story rather than merely increasing drama.

Compose a chapter sequence that alternates glued and breathing seams intentionally.
